University of Pittsburgh Graduate Student Research
I am the main advisor to the following 4 Ph.D and
one M.S. students
Current
·
Alison Graettinger (Ph.D)
Dates: Starts August 2009
Topic: Building Ice-Age Dyngjufjöll: Processes,
Products and Environments
·
Holly Kagy (Ph.D)
Dates: Started August
2008
Topic: Processes and Products of Basaltic
Dike-ice Interaction on Mars
·
Emily Mercurio (Ph.D)
Dates: Started August
2007
Topic: The Evolution of an Ice-Confined
Fissure-Erupted Basaltic Complex: Sveifluháls, SW Iceland. She is working
on documenting and interpreting this complex, especially in terms of how the
deposits record evidence of the former ice.
This is the first detailed study of a formerly ice-confined complex of
fissure-erupted basalts that I know.
There are more than 1000 of these in Iceland, and they represent an
important untapped database on former ice conditions in the North
Atlantic. Web Page: http://www.pitt.edu/~ekc4/
·
Jefferson Hungerford (Ph.D)
Dates: Started May 2006
Topic: The Emplacement of Basaltic Lava Flows
Beneath Ice: Examples from Mount Edziza, Canada and Mauna Kea, Hawaii
·
Elizabeth Simoneau (M.S.)
Dates: Started August
2006
Topic: Eruption and
Emplacement Mechanisms and Paleoenvironment of
Phreatomagmatic Tephra at
Koko Crater, O’ahu, Hawaii
Projected to Graduate in
Fall 2009
Former
·
Murray McClintock (Ph.D)
Dates: August 2002 to
December 2006 (graduated)
Topic: Volcanology of a Flood
Basalt Cone, Crater, Lava and Intrusion
Complex,
Karoo, South Africa. Web
Page:
http://www.otago.ac.nz/geology/people/students/mcclintock/index.html.
Note that
this student was not based at the University of Pittsburgh but at the
University
of Hawaii (2002-2005). He was
co-advised by Skilling and Bruce
Houghton
(University of Hawaii) from 2002-2005.
The student moved to the
University
of Otago(New Zealand) in 2005 and was then advised by James
White. Funding for his fieldwork and most of his
lab analyses until 2005 was
from the
NSF-EAR 0125050 grant of Skilling (Explaining the Eruption of Huge
Volumes of
Magma and Sediment at the Onset of Karoo LIP Volcanism). This
grant was a
collaborative research award (with Bruce Houghton, University of
Hawaii), awarded to Skilling while he was at
the University of Southern
Mississippi
(USM). USM does not have a Ph.D program
in geology, hence Murray
had to be
based at the University of Hawaii.
Murray now works as a consultant
to the
mining industry and is based in New Zealand

·
Tracee Imai (M.S.)
Dates: Spring 2003 to April 2009 (graduated)
Topic: Peperite-Bearing Blocks Within
Block-and-Ash Flow Deposits:
Understanding
the Miocene Mehrten Formation at Kirkwood, California.
Tracee
now works for Schlumberger in Pittsburgh
·
Kristen LaMoreaux (M.S.)
Dates: August 2005 to August 2008 (graduated)
Topic: Recognizing ice-Contact
Trachyte-Phonolite Lavas at the Mount Edziza
Volcanic Complex, British
Columbia, Canada.
http://d-scholarship.pitt.edu/2339/
·
Jessica Bluth (M.S.)
Dates: August 2002 to August
2004 (graduated)
http://d-scholarship.pitt.edu/371/. Jessica now works as a hydrogeologist in New
York.
Graduate Student Research (Prior to University of
Pittsburgh)
Note that the University of Southern Mississippi
does not have a Ph.D program in geology, and at this institute (and my previous
one, Rhodes University) I had heavy teaching loads and little time to advise
student research.

project
entitled “Discriminating Vent Sites Along a
Formerly Ice-Confined Basaltic

on Former Ice Conditions”. She
will be joining Skilling and two of his Ph.D students
for fieldwork in August 2009.
She will be collecting samples for geochemistry
(chemostratigraphy) and textural analysis

Alison Blake (Honours, Rhodes University, South Africa)
(graduated 1999)
The above four
undergraduate students all worked with me on aspects of the geology of large
volume mafic volcaniclastic deposits, emplaced at the onset of Karoo flood
basalt volcanism in South Africa. Most
of their work involved mapping and sedimentary logging.
